Head shaking, tossing, flicking. What we know so far...

Headshaking is a perplexing and often frustrating condition that can significantly affect a horse's comfort, performance, and quality of life. Among the various causes of headshaking, trigeminal-mediated headshaking (TMH) is particularly challenging due to its complex origins and variable presentation. Affected horses suffering trigeminal-mediated headshaking are considered to have neuropathic facial pain, which negatively impacts welfare. In general, head shaking is considered normal behaviour however, violent or sudden shaking, for prolonged periods or continuously, is considered abnormal behaviour. A study in the UK showed that 4.6% of horse owners reported head shaking in their horse.
